Shade the resting and water-point zones
Benches, water points and entrances can be useful first priorities. Include separated-use areas and the times when the park is busiest, then assess the moving footprint against those destinations.
Preserve supervision, gate circulation and accessible movement. Existing fencing needs structural assessment before being considered for attachment; an informal low sail between fence posts is not a verified installation.

Match coverage to the activity
| Area or use | Information to show | Decision to review |
|---|---|---|
| Rest benches | Occupied hours and seating | Moving footprint and visibility |
| Water points | Animal/owner access | Clear routes and practical cleaning |
| Gates/separate-use areas | Operator layout | Supports do not obstruct supervision/access |

Make maintenance and ground work practical
Irrigation, utilities, surface reinstatement and service access can constrain foundations. Ask how cleaning or repair is performed and which areas close during the work. Keep the park’s welfare/heat-use guidance separate from the structure’s sun-shading function.

Build a useful project brief
- Bench, water-point and gate locations.
- Separated-use areas and supervision sightlines.
- Irrigation/utility constraints and ground conditions.
- Maintenance access and operator heat-use policies.
Clear answers
Questions before the next step.
Does shade guarantee a dog park is safe during extreme heat?
Shade changes direct sun exposure within a moving footprint. Follow operator and veterinary guidance for the conditions and animals, with fresh water and monitoring; a sail does not guarantee safe use in extreme heat.
Can existing shade be repaired or replaced?
Start with a condition review of the fabric, supports and connections. Repair, a replacement panel or a revised layout may be appropriate depending on the actual problem.
Does changing bench placement affect the design?
Yes. The coverage should serve the actual resting/waiting layout at the relevant hours, so share intended furniture positions.
