Restaurant Patio Shade Structures
Good patio shade starts with seating, service movement and the hours when the tables are actually occupied.

Compare midday cover with afternoon dining
A canopy centered on the seating plan may provide useful midday shade while leaving west-facing tables exposed later. Tell the team when the patio is busiest and use the actual table and server-route plan in the coverage review.
If a vertical panel or valance is considered for low-angle sun, discuss airflow, visibility and exposure as well as the appearance. The supporting design and building interfaces need review; extra fabric should not be improvised on a finished installation.

Match coverage to the activity
| Area or use | Information to show | Decision to review |
|---|---|---|
| Midday dining | Occupied table plan | Useful overhead footprint |
| Afternoon service | Low-angle exposure and seating | Appropriate panel/valance/support options |
| Equipment interface | Lights, heaters or signage | Qualified coordination, not informal attachments |

Separate landlord and operating responsibilities
Identify landlord approvals, furniture moves, equipment interfaces and allowable work periods. Lighting, heaters and signs belong with the appropriate project team rather than being attached casually to a sail/frame. Ask what removal or surface restoration is included before agreeing closures.

Build a useful project brief
- Table plan, server routes and peak service hours.
- Door, accessible-route and equipment clearances.
- Landlord/owner approvals and restaurant closure limits.
- Sun-only versus specified rain-coverage objective.
Clear answers
Questions before the next step.
Can you shade a patio without putting poles between tables?
Compare feasible supports and building-connection options with the seating/service plan. The provider must assess those interfaces; an available wall is not automatically a suitable anchor.
Can existing shade be repaired or replaced?
Start with a condition review of the fabric, supports and connections. Repair, a replacement panel or a revised layout may be appropriate depending on the actual problem.
What should the restaurant decide before design?
Occupied hours, seating/service routes, rain requirements and owner/landlord constraints are more useful than selecting an exact sail size first.
