Commercial Hip Shade Structures

A framed hip-style shade structure provides a defined roof-shaped form. Evaluate the footprint and supporting columns against the property’s circulation and coverage needs.

Choose the form for the use

SHADE Industries includes hip structures in its published product range. A framed layout can suit a defined activity or parking area, but the usable shade still depends on sun angle, roof geometry and site position.

A framed roof form, not a free sail

The provider describes columns supporting a traditional hip-and-ridge form. Its lower perimeter and raised center create a different spatial profile from fabric spanning between separate sail anchors. Compare those heights with the activity, furniture or vehicle envelope.

A framed layout can suit a defined footprint, but useful shade still changes with sun position. Review column locations, edge clearance and maintenance access; the form alone does not establish waterproofing or a universal wind rating.

Fit columns and clearance to operations

Discuss doors, vehicle movements, play areas, walking routes and emergency/service access before settling the column layout. The overall structure height and edge clearances are not the same as a simple fabric dimension.

Specify fabric, structure and drainage together

Identify the actual roof/fabric system, supporting steel, foundations and connection details. Rain behavior must be confirmed for that selected assembly; “hip structure” alone does not establish waterproofing.

Identify the selected roof/fabric system and the steel, foundation, installation and reinstatement work included. Share utility information and surfaces affected by excavation. If other trades or the owner supply parts of the work, state those interfaces clearly.

Plan inspection and future cover replacement access while the concept is still flexible. The selected cover’s manufacturer terms and installation workmanship terms should be provided separately at handover.

Clear answers

Questions before the next step.

Is a hip structure the same as a gazebo?

It describes a framed roof-shaped form, but the materials and installed system can differ from a conventional solid-roof gazebo. Compare the actual proposal, not the name alone.

Can it provide rain cover?

Only where the selected fabric/roof assembly and drainage are appropriate for that objective. The hip shape by itself does not establish waterproofing.
